This month we have 2 winners of the Free Round Competition

  1. Sam Georgiadis – Sam is a new member of Hurstville Golf Club and his reason for why he should win was, “because I like golf”. In future we would like Sam to be more passionate about our chosen sport and quote that he loves the game.
  2. Maurice Press – Maurice is a regular Tuesday comp player and his reason why he should win was, “I’m desperate”. Congratulations Maurice and on behalf of BlueFit we hope this win helps you recover from your recent illness and gets you back on the course ASAP.

Welcome to BlueFit Golf’s April newsletter. It’s all happening this month at Hurstville Golf Course. On Friday 4th April we host The Grand Opening of the fantastic new Par 70 layout for The Mayoral Golf Day. It’s always a very fun day with lots of prizes, great food and plenty of amber liquid. The sponsors, councilors and members who are playing will be in for a spectacular surprise with the new holes which will challenge them to say the least.

On Saturday 5th and Tuesday 8th April Hurstville Golf Club members get their first chance to tackle the new layout. It’s been a long wait, but I’m sure once they get out on the new holes they will realize that it’s been worth while. To thank the members for their patience during the construction of the new course, Hurstville Golf Club will be satisfying everyone’s appetite with a FREE BBQ sausage roll.

On Sunday 6th April BlueFit Golf will host an Open Golf Day from 11am – 3pm. Players must book in through the pro shop for a tee time and optional golf cart. Courtesy of BlueFit both the green fees and cart hire are FREE of charge for this Open Day. Please book in quickly through the pro shop as tee times are limited and it’s purely a case of first in best dressed.

For the rest of April BlueFit Golf will be running some additional promotions to attract more social players outside member’s competition times. Members are welcome to take up these deals within the promotional times only.
This month’s newsletter will also feature Upcoming Events, Pro Shop Specials, New Products, Rules & Etiquette, NRL Tipping Comp, Free Round winner and a new spot the ball competition. Also, if you have any interesting golf news or stories please let us know so we can share it with the other readers in future editions.

Member News

As mentioned earlier, members will be back playing the full 18 holes from Saturday 5th April. Play will once again commence from both the 1st and 10th tees which will allow more members to tee off early. Phone bookings will remain unchanged with members still needing to call the pro shop 8 days in advance from 8am for competition times. Thursdays and Fridays competitions can also be booked either by phone call or in person.
The pennants teams have been performing well in 2014. The Majors team narrowly missed out on winning their division. It came down to the last game where they needed a win to take out top position. Unfortunately a few team members lost their game after play was postponed due to a severe storm and the boys ended up finishing a respectable 3rd place. The ladies pennants and super seniors have also been showing patches of good form. Both teams have recorded a few wins each and still have more games to play. We wish them all the best for the remaining games.
The 11th hole is proving to be a favorite amongst the members of Hurstville. Especially for Jessie Hancock, Michael Graham and Eddie Lees who have recorded hole in ones on this popular hole over the last month. Congratulations to all of them on joining the Hole in One Club.

The Holden Scramble is booked into the calendar again for 2014. The event will be held on Friday 18th July and will only be open to members and their guests. Hopefully changing the event to a Friday will attract more players. More information about the event will posted soon.

The Handiskins Tournament which was a big success in its inaugural year is back on in 2014. We had 50 players enter the tournament in 2013 where they combined their best 3 rounds over 5 qualifying days. Players’ scores and their ranking were listed on the Handiskins website after each round which helped players gauge what score they needed to catch the leaders. The top 4 players after Round 5 went on to play a skins match for $1200 which was extremely exciting for both the players and spectators. This years qualifying rounds will be held on the following dates (weather permitting);
•    Saturday 24th May
•    Saturday 31st May
•    Saturday 14th June
•    Saturday 21st June
•    Saturday 12th July

BlueFit Golf is once again hosting a NRL Tipping Competition in 2014. This year we have restricted our tipsters to members and staff at Hurstville Golf Course. There have been lots of upset victories in the first 3 rounds which have made tipping rather difficult to say the least. After 3 rounds the leader board has Ian Perriman & our resident trainee Craig Cox on top with 13 points. Last place is on 8 points, so there’s not a lot in it at this stage. All tipsters are reminded that they need to drop their $20 into the pro shop by 5th April or they will be removed from the competition.

“Clean up your Act!!” “or consider getting a Grip??”

Its coming into Autumn/Winter and it’s a good time to consider either cleaning your grips thoroughly or replacing them if they are getting shiny, worn or old.
Having grips like this can cause compensations in your game, considering the main fundamental in golf is… “Your Grip”!!!! Your only contact with a golf club is through your hands and if you can’t grip it properly then you are behind the eight ball.
A grip that is too thin can cause you to grip too strongly and over rotate your hands through impact, resulting in a pulled shot to the left. A grip that is too thick can have the opposite effect.
If your grips are not beyond retirement, consider cleaning your grips with detergent and warm water. A nail brush will do the trick to get the dirt off!!
If your grip pressure is too tight, this could be a result of your grip being too thin or badly worn. A badly worn, shiny or old grip will be detrimental to your golf. Even if your clubs are getting old, but they’re not ready to retire yet, it is amazing the different a new set of grips can make. Just think of driving a car on the road with bald tyres and the difference when you get a fresh set of treads!! The same is very true in golf!!
If you want to enjoy your game more, play better and maybe win more it is a wise investment in your game to have your grips looked at by us. Starting from $7 fitted
You can even use your hard earned prize money towards this!!!

Pace of play tips

The following points will assist all golfers to complete their round in the appropriate time and stay in touch with the group in front without significant delays:

  • Arrive at the Pro Shop at least 30 minutes before your tee time
  • Be at the 1st tee ready to hit at least 5 minutes before your time
  • Hit as soon as it is safe to do so (shortest hitter first)
  • Leave the tee as soon as the last player in group has hit
  • Walk briskly to your ball
  • Always be ready to hit when it’s your turn
  • Watch flight of ball carefully and mark ball location with identifiable object on course
  • Pick up ball when out of shots on a hole
  • Play a provisional ball immediately if in doubt as to whether or not your ball is lost
  • Don’t leave your buggy at the entrance to the green, place it near the exit to the next tee
  • On the green think about your line of putt while awaiting your turn
  • Do not practise chipping or putting after completing any hole
  • The 1st two in your group to putt out should proceed to the next tee and hit if you have lost ground on the group in front
  • Mark your card on the next tee while others are hitting of
  • Ignore the honour (hit when ready and/or shortest hitter first when it’s safe)

This month we are running a new competition called spot the ball. The picture below is of Hurstville Head Professional Stewart Hardiman playing a bunker shot. To enter the competition all you need to do is email golf@bluefit.com.au and tell us which grid (eg. A8) you believe the golf ball was in before Craig magically made it disappear with his photo shop skills. The competition is limited to one entry per person, with correct selections to go into a draw for a FREE bunker lesson from one of your pro shop staff members.

This month’s winner of the Free Round of Golf competition is David Rose. David is a regular player at Hurstville Golf Course and his reason for why he should win was “I need the exercise”. Congratulations David.
Please make sure you continue to enter the competition each time you play a round. Although the entry forms aren’t currently attached to the scorecards, they are on the front counter to take when paying for your next round.

Happy New Year and welcome to our first newsletter of 2014. Like the Sydney Harbour fireworks that welcomed us into the New Year, this year is going to be a cracker at Hurstville Golf Course. The major highlight of 2014 will be the opening of the new Par 70 layout. April is usually a time when all golfers start thinking about Augusta and The US Masters Tournament, but this April members will be focused on Hurstville Golf Course and taking on the challenging new course.  There will also be lots of fantastic events for members to participate in. Holden Scramble, Handiskins, Pennants (Mixed & Major) and the Club Championships will be back on again after a gap year. We will also be running the BlueFit NRL tipping competition again in 2014 for those armchair experts. As well as an update on the Course Improvements this month’s E-Newsletter will feature Paul’s Pro tip, Christmas Golf Day review, Pro Shop Specials, New Products, Rules & Ettiquette, Free Round winner and a new spot the ball competition. If you have any interesting golf news or stories please let us know so we can share it with the other readers in future editions

Not long now…. 2014 is here and the new course is nearly ready. The renovations have been in progress for over 4 months now and it’s amazing how much work has been completed in this time. Hundreds of trucks have come and gone with thousands of tonnes of clay fill. Bulldozers have moved and shaped fairways, tees and greens. Special trench diggers have made tunnels for new irrigation piping to be laid. New sprinkler heads have been connected. All this construction has set the platform for the most exciting phase of the renovations….Grass laying. Santa arrived early at Hurstville Golf Course last year and his form of transport was a rather large truck which was stocked full of carpet like rolls of turf. His elves rolled out the 15m long rolls of grass with the use of a little bob cat (see video attachment).
After Christmas, trucks have continued to drop off new loads of fresh grass and on the 4th January the 3rd hole was completed. Grass from tee to green and it looks a treat (check out the before and after photos). Barry and his assistants have been keeping our new arrivals well hydrated along with some handy showers from above and also giving it a regular mow. Barry has advised that the new grass is taking well and growing quicker than Mitchell Johnson’s moustache. On the 8th January the new greens will be rolled out
