Thursday 6th August was just your typical member’s midweek competition until Nick Pantano, one of Hurstville Golf Clubs most likeable characters and regular comp players, turned up to play.
Nick who plays off a GA handicap of 3 who always takes out the best-dressed award every time he shows up, was about to have a round that he would remember for a lifetime.
Often threatening to break par he had only managed this feat on one occasion with a 69 (1 under-par) once before. But this Thursday was the time to break all club records. His front 9 was extremely solid with birdies on the 1st, 4th and 8th holes to turn in a bogey-free 34 (3 under-par). A bogey on the 10th hole could have stopped his momentum, but his previous experiences helped him the steady the ship.
Today wouldn’t be the day he would let a great round fall by the wayside. He had pars on the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th saw Nick approach the 15th hole looking to take advantage of the Par 5 which he did with another birdie to get back to 3 under-par.
Standing on the 16th tee, Nick was about to face Hurstville Golf Club’s three treacherous closing holes including the super challenging 17th which has ruined many a good round. A solid par on 16, followed by another on 17 and all he needed was a well-struck 8 iron on the last hole. And that he did, firing a purely struck iron shot into 3 feet from the hole.
All that remained was a knee rattler for birdie which would get any players heart rate up. But Nick took full control of his own destiny, kept his cool and poured in the putt centre cup for a sensational round of 66 (4 under-par).
It’s the best round by any member and has only been beaten by a handful of PGA professionals playing in our annual Pro-Am. Congratulations Nick on a superb round and we hope there are more to come!
