Handiskins Final

On Saturday the 22nd of August the final for the 2020 Hurstville GC Handiskins tournament took place. The finalists teed off in the cold at 8:30 am, with the day fining up as the final went on. The four competitors included Jimmy White, Danny Rothwell, Lloyd Piper (all off 9 handicaps), and Matt Abel on an 18 handicap.

Lloyd and Matt won the first two holes, with the 3rd hole being squared among the group. Jimmy White cashed in on the 4th hole to collect 2 skins ($80). Holes 5 & 6 were also drawn, making the 7th hole worth $140. Danny Rothwell missed a makeable birdie putt, and under the pressure, Lloyd Piper knocked in his birdie opportunity to take the triple skin.

Lloyd was getting in the groove and narrowly missed a putt on the 8th to grab another skin. However, he stepped up on the 9th tee and nailed his drive 200m down the pipe. With other players in trouble, he calmly hit his wedge to 15 foot and two-putted for an easy double skin.

At the turn, Danny Rothwell was yet to win a skin. However, the halfway sausage roll must have kick started his game. He won the 10th hole, and with holes 11, 12, and 13 being squared by the group, he took his chance to cash in on the par 4 14th, worth $280.

For good measure, Lloyd took the 15th hole worth $80 to move to a total of $395. Danny and Matt squared the 16th hole, giving the guys a nice pot to play for on 17. Matt Abel won the hole, bringing his total to $215 respectively. The boys squared the final hole, which split the $80 between the players.

The $60 nearest the pin prizes were available on the 4th and 16th holes. No players hit the green on the 4th hole, so the prize money was split. Danny Rothwell hit a good approach onto the 16th green to collect the prize.
Total prize money won was Danny Rothwell on $435, Lloyd Piper with $415, Matt Abel with $235, and Jimmy White with $115.

The Handiskins event continues to grow each year, both within our club and nationwide. With 49 participants this year it is safe to say that this tournament is one of our calendar events of the year. We can’t wait to run the tournament next year, and hopefully, the National Final at RACV Royal Pines (Wednesday 28th April – Sunday 2nd May 2021) will go ahead.
