While most golfers spend July and August huddled around the heater waiting for the spring thaw, a select few are out on the fairways, playing through frosty mornings, soggy lies, and biting southerly winds. This month, we are shining a spotlight on one of our most dedicated regulars: the local club stalwart who never let the plunging temperatures ruin their tee time.
Meet Dave
This month, we spoke to Dave who has been a valued member of Hurstville Golf Course for 11 years. Throughout the winter months, Dave has been one of the most consistent golfers on the course, regularly competing in member events on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Dave's dedication goes well beyond his scorecard. On Mondays, he helps out with the volunteer gardening group to keep the course looking its best, and he actively represents Hurstville in the Super Senior Pennants. When he isn't competing or helping out, he can almost always be found on the practice area working on all aspects of his game. He is, in every sense, a dedicated member on all levels.
Behind the Swing: Winter Progression
During our chat, we asked Dave how he stays motivated to play so often, especially on those frosty mornings when it would be far easier to stay warm in bed.
"I recently made changes to my equipment with different shafts in my irons, so I wanted to play regularly to become comfortable with them," Dave shared.
He added that making targeted adjustments to his physical set-up and swing tempo gave him the confidence and drive needed to keep pushing through the winter months.
That commitment to the grind has paid off significantly on the course.
"The weak part of my game was 100 meters in, and the more I practiced, the more I could see improvement in my game," Dave noted.
Dave also wanted to pass along a quick note of gratitude to his squad Barry, John, and the boys in the Super Senior Pennants team for a fun year.
“It was great to share such good times with the team and play some great courses."
